Programme of the 21st SURVIVAL Art Review

The 21st edition of the SURVIVAL Art Review is approaching fast. This is the next instalment of the unique contemporary art presentation organised by the Art Transparent Foundation. This year’s SURVIVAL will be held from 23 to 27 June in the Popowice Depot, one of the largest surviving complexes in Przedmieście Mikołajskie, which has previously been inaccessible to the general public. More than 40 artists from Poland and abroad will show their works addressing the Review’s slogan “ersatz”. In addition to the main exhibition, the programme includes curator-led tours and meetings held as part of the Public Forum. The Foundation has also prepared a rich accessibility programme that takes into account sign language and “quiet hours” – tours for highly sensitive people. Admission to SURVIVAL is free of charge. Registration is required for the guided tours.

21 years of urban exploration

For 21 years now, SURVIVAL has been taking up the challenge of introducing contemporary art into unusual urban spaces. Previous editions of this unique event have been held at Wrocław Główny railway station, the abandoned Institute of Pharmacy of the Medical Academy, the Four Domes Pavilion (today a branch of the National Museum), the former Pafawag Rolling Stock Factory or the Bethany Hospital on Traugutta Street. This year, the artists and visitors will have the opportunity to experience the spaces of the Popowice Depot, where public transport vehicles used to be repaired and which has not yet been made available to the general public.

The Depot complex at ul. Legnicka 65A was built between 1900 and 1901 as one of three depots constructed in Wrocław at the time for its modern electric tramway system. The Depot is located in the western part of Wrocław, in the historic Przedmieście Mikołajskie estate, which used to have the largest concentration of multi-family dwellings in Wrocław. During the siege of Festung Breslau, the district was almost razed to the ground – more than ninety per cent of its building stock ceased to exist. The war literally turned this part of the city into a sea of ruins. Przedmieście Mikołajskie became one of the symbols of the pointless and, above all, tragic consequences of the war. Apart from the Popowice Depot complex, only a handful (out of several hundred) tenement houses and other buildings have survived in the area, overshadowed by the blocks of flats erected here on a large scale since the beginning of the 1960s.

“Ersatz” in art and debate

The word “ersatz: came into use during World War I. It denotes a substitute for a thing or activity, a counterfeit of something that is highly desirable – usually of inferior quality, but sharing characteristics with the original. Times of authoritarian rule showed that an ersatz could be used to effectively pull the wool over everybody’s eyes, even on a large national scale. In Polish, the German ersatz was turned into a familiar-sounding erzac, accentuating the intertwined economic and geopolitical perspectives shaping our region. Post-communist Poland, and perhaps all of Eastern and Central Europe, was built on shock therapy, a flood of counterfeits and the belief that by not moving too much, one could find oneself on the Western side. Ersatz has always been a manifestation of class divisions, while the transition from “fake” to original has been one of the clearest symbols of economic advancement. The history of the visual arts leads from representation to abstraction and beyond – for example, through readymade items or appropriation art – exploring the tension between original and imitation. The sound art of the Western civilization is full of attempts at perfect imitation.

This year’s multifaceted idea will be developed in the works by SURVIVAL artists. The spaces of the Popowice Depot will feature several dozen works from fields such as painting, sculpture, installation, video and sound projects. An inseparable element of the Review is the Audience Award, this year founded by the Mayor of Wrocław, which will be presented to an artist whose work receives the highest number of votes. We encourage you to vote for your favourite artistic piece as you visit the Review. On Tuesday evening, Art Transparent invites you to a concert by Maja Miro, which will be the final, closing event of this year’s Review.

Intercontinental Public Forum

Like each year, the Public Forum is a place to meet, exchange views and experiences. The Art Transparent Foundation – the organiser of the Review – participates in many international as well as intercontinental projects. As part of one of them, called “Deconfining Arts, Culture and Politics in Europe and Africa,” representatives of the partner organisations: Women’s History Museum (Zambia) and Nafasi Art Space (Tanzania) are visiting this year’s Review. The project aims to forge new and equal cultural relations between Europe and Africa by creating a sustainable model of collaboration. It brings together cultural practitioners, policy makers, artists working in the fields of performing and visual arts, universities and audiences from both continents to create new forms of intercontinental artistic and cultural cooperation. By doing so, it contributes to a better, more inclusive understanding of the patterns of constraints to collaboration from an intercontinental perspective. The overarching aim of this undertaking is to break free from paternalistic and colonialist ways of thinking in favour of a strong participatory attitude, at the same time providing better access to information about forms of intercontinental mobility and co-creation. As part of the Public Forum of SURVIVAL 21, Art Transparent will also inaugurate the Polish edition of the international project The Big Green, which will culminate in a set of good practices for organisers of sustainable art festivals. Throughout the weekend, the Foundation invites you to presentations and discussions with guest speakers from Tanzania, Zambia and Poland.

On Monday, Art Transparent together with the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities invite you to two lectures. During the meeting Trump’s Golden Toilet. What Is Conspicuous Consumption Good For? Agata Gąsiorowska will talk about how consumption and possession of material things can be used as an ersatz satisfying our emotional, spiritual or social needs. Katarzyna Kulwicka’s lecture Love in the Age of App-culture will discuss how the presence of new technologies has affected interpersonal relationships – whether and who finds it easier to meet new people, and whether the quality of close relationships has changed as a result.

Art accessible to all

The 21st edition of SURVIVAL also features an extensive accessibility programme, which aims to bring art closer to the audience and invite various social groups to participate in the Review. SURVIVAL’s programme includes guided tours of the exhibition and venue in the SAW! (Senior Art Walk), BAW! (Baby Art Walk) and KAW! (Kid Art Walk) cycles, for seniors, parents of very young children and of children aged 5-10, respectively. A workshop for children is also planned, during which they will create large-format collages. Guided tours with audio-description and translation into Polish Sign Language have been prepared in collaboration with the Katarynka Foundation. Art Transparent also invites you to “silent tours” – from Sunday to Tuesday, from noon to 1 pm, the sound works will be muted and strong light and acoustic stimuli will be limited.

After party

During the festival, the organisers invite you to the Festival Club, which will be open throughout the Review. On the evenings of 23 and 24 June, after 10 pm, it will become the venue for an after party. On Friday, the party will be opened by Mac Lewandowski with his performance re:, which will also involve the audience in karaoke. From 11 pm to 4 am, Dejot and Wojtek Furmaniuk will be our DJs. Saturday’s DJ set will start at 10 pm, with appearances of DiV4 and Leandra, followed by Leandra and Veronicami from midnight. The entire event will take place in the post-industrial hall of the Popowice Depot, and the DJ stand will be set up on an old tram chassis. Importantly, after midnight, the event area can only be accessed from Legnicka Street.

Admission to the SURVIVAL events is free. Registration at https://app.evenea.pl/event/survival21/ is required for the guided tours, which will start on 13 June at 1:23 pm.

Accompanying exhibition at the Szewska gallery

A selection of details of the works presented during the 21st edition of SURVIVAL will be shown in the Szewska street gallery until 30 June. In response to this year’s slogan “Ersatz,” the artists take different perspectives and set out unapparent interpretative directions.

The 21st edition of SURVIVAL will be held between 23 and 27 June in the previously inaccessible spaces of the Popowice Depot at ul. Legnicka 65A (entrance from Lutra Street). The Review is organised by the Art Transparent Foundation. The Mayor of Wrocław has assumed honorary patronage of the Review. Details can be found at www.survival.art.pl and www.arttransparent.org.
