Katarzyna Ćwikła, “The Hospital Project”

Almost 60 colour pictures and stories create the intimate and unique history of T. Marciniak Specialist Hospital.

In May 2021, Katarzyna Ćwikła, a photographer from Wrocław, entered the unused hospital in Traugutta Street for the first time. She took several dozen photos of the empty sick rooms and legendary corridors. This is how the Hospital Project emerged, although it was not yet clear at that time how it would develop.

Few months later, Katarzyna met some of the people who had worked in the hospital or stayed in it as patients. Their stories gave substance to the static shots of this probably most well-known of Wrocław’s hospitals. She took more photos in June 2022. In the end , almost 60 colour pictures and stories create the intimate and unique history of T. Marciniak Specialist Hospital.

Katarzyna Ćwikła studies Media Art at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław. She is the founder of a research club at the Staged Photography Studio of the Department of Media Art. Her works have been shown in individual and collective exhibitions.
